Mark your calendars for the annual Peter Archer Spring Regatta being held on Sunday, March 20.

Final Schedule Check to be sure you have been registered in correct event when posted Wednesday evening March 16th, 2011.

Early check in on Saturday, March 19 from 5-7PM @ the boat house (Highly Recommended).

* Traffic pattern for the 2000m races:

After launching from the beach, go up the course and head right at the channel towards the low bridge. For boats launching from the boathouse, head straight across towards the low bridge. NO PASSING under the two bridges.

The start is at Los Alamitos Yacht club and crews may continue to warm up in the channel behind the start. The starting area is not clearly marked, so please be sure not to venture into the starting area itself until it’s time for your race. It will take approximately 20-30 minutes to go under the bridges, around the island, and to the starting area so please plan your warm up accordingly.
* Heel ties and bow balls will be checked the morning of the race on the boathouse side for crews launching from the boathouse and on the beachside. Control commission members will be approaching boats to complete
the check.

Registration (ALL forms must be filled out for valid entry):

Here is an update from our fearless leader, Tim Anderson:

Greetings LBRA and all LBRA 2010 January Virtual Team Challenge Team
Members! (AKA, Head’s up Party People!)

Here’s an update on the team progress so far this year, through the Beach
Sprints. We’re doing pretty well, with A.C. being the Real Big Dog so far
at 536,080 meters with a week to go! Amazing; do you have a life this month
A.C.?! In a very strong second place is Jeanette LePont at 283,193 meters,
and yours truly here in a distant third at 169,650 meters. We have 26
hard-rowing LBRA members participating this year. LBRA Team and individual
member standings can be viewed at
http://www.concept2.com/sranking03/team/profile.asp?rt_index=2431 . Not
too shabby, but we’ve still got one week to go, so let’s recover as quickly
as we can from the Beach Sprints, and give this challenge our own LBRA style
sprint to the finish. While it’s not a surprise, it’s always awesome to be
well ahead of many of those nose-in-the-air east coast clubs. (Personal
bias on the part of your team captain there gang.!)

While Intra-Team standings are fine, what really counts are our standings
relative to the rest of the world. As of today, January 22, we’re at
3,121,799 meters. The various cuts/stats are outlined below for your
reading pleasure. You can also find them on the January Virtual Team
Challenge page at
http://www.concept2.com/sranking03/team/teamStandings.asp?re_index=45&group=
team :

- Our overall standing for all teams of all sizes is 24th , with
average meters rowed per member of 120,069. In terms of average meters
rowed, we stand at 43rd overall
- For “All Rowing Clubs” we are in 7th place, with our average meters
per member logging us at 13th. (A.C. and Jeanette, you guys are carrying
the team so far!)
- Here’s where it gets good: for all Rowing Clubs with 21 to 50
members, we stand at 4th place, and on an average meters basis, 2nd. So,
the last week gives us all a chance to move that up to 1st.
- For all teams with 21 to 50 members, we hold 11th place overall, and
5th on an average meters basis, so here again, let’s get out there this last
week and row some butt!
- Lastly, let’s all row a little extra hard this last week for LBRA
Team Member Mary Ensch, who in spite of unexpectedly losing her husband last
month, has contributed to our success this year. Please keep Mary and her
family in your thoughts.

I’ll have another wrap-up for you next week after we finish the Challenge.
THANK YOU to all the dedicated LBRA team members who’ve helped make this
year’s challenge a real success, and a special thanks to Liza Luna for her
herculean and prompt help with this challenge.

“Welcome back everyone, for the 2011 Virtual Team Challenge, which begins JANUARY 1, 2011! There are a few important things to keep in mind, just as a reminder::

1) You must have registered with C2 with your email address, have an online logbook account and have established a ranking I.D. #. (All of which are required to “opt-in.”

2) You must “Opt-In” to the challenge to participate in our team, and you must d! o that via the C2 website. If you don’t do so by 1/15/11, you’ll be blocked from doing so thereafter.

3) It’s usually helpful to enter your meters daily, although I appreciate that not everyone will be able to do that, in which case, please try to get them in by Friday of each week. There’s a good reason: Team Standings are published real time on the C2 web site, so it’s good to see our team progress.

4) While I don’t enforce minimum meters, I do ask that you commit to at least 100k meters over the month; this is a VERY competitive challenge and the so-called big shots back east are gunning for LBRA every year. If we each commit to at least 100k, then our odds of remaining competitive are very good. Low participation has a disproportionate detrimental effect to the “average meters per member” stats.

So far, we have 6 LBRA members opted in: Yours Truly, A.C., Carol Hansen (Carol please get after Joan and John for us…!), Jeannette LePont, Mario Passanisi and Big Dave Sta! nton. I’ll provide commentary each week on our progress.

Lastly, GO BEACH

The annual LBRA Bill Lockyer Christmas Regatta was on Sunday, December 5, 2010 at Marine Stadium.

The results are in. This proved to be an exciting race day and LBRA would like to thank all of the competitors and volunteers that made this regatta one of our best!

As one of the oldest rowing regattas on the west coast (at 44 consecutive years), this fun event traditionally marks the end of the head race season and transitions competitors to the 2000 meter race distance. With all races “only” 850 meters, the shorter-than-usual distance provides an opportunity to enjoy a day of racing in multiple events in a casual, festive atmosphere. Thank you to all who joined LBRA in this traditional celebration of winter rowing in Southern California!

2010 FISA Masters Worlds, September 2-5, at St. Catharine’s, Ontario, Canada

Congratulations to all Long Beach Rowing Association competitors who raced at the recent FISA Masters Worlds on the FISA course at St. Catharine’s, Canada. With 28 LBRA members attending, this was the largest contingent of LBRA members to ever attend this annual international event, which is usually held in Europe.

Medalist John VanBlom

Many members entered over 8 races during the four day regatta (including Sunday’s mixed races), making the most of the rule which allows competitors an unlimited number of races, although the tight 3-minute race schedule, as well as entry and boat transport fees for each race, may have created some limitations! With LBRA team spirit and camaraderie, the LBRA team endured (and enjoyed!) several busy days of rigging, training, and racing… first in hot, humid conditions, followed by cooler temperatures and (sometimes) thunderstorms and high winds. The weather caused a 90 minute delay in races on Friday afternoon, and, unfortunately, a complete cancellation of over 6 hours of afternoon racing on Saturday. Before the race cancellations, the conditions were so rough that two LBRA boats experienced the relatively rare occurrence of flipping during, or shortly before, a race. The determined LBRA competitors got back in the boat, and completed the 1000 meter race…even passing other boats!

Team LBRA!

The eclectic LBRA group, all dedicated to performing their best, as well as supporting their teammates, ranged in ages from mid-30’s to 80’s. They included exuberant new rowers with less than two years of rowing behind them (all decked out in the latest matching LBRA team attire) and crusty long-time members, former national team rowers and Olympians, many with over forty years of LBRA membership.

Among the extremely tough international competition, LBRA took many seconds and thirds, and several first place medals. It is particularly notable that all of the LBRA competitors, including the new rowers, put themselves to the ultimate test by entering small boats…singles, doubles, and pairs, as well as the larger fours, quads, and eights.

Medalists (some multiple) include Fritz Theyer (we all knew he’d win, he told us he would enough times!), Christine Dartiguenave, Bill Eldon, Rob Glidden, Pat Hayes, David Kidd, Renn Levy, Mark Mason (cox), Dan McGill, John Nunn, Mary Perrot, Peter Rasmussen, John Van Blom, and Joan Van Blom.

Joan VanBlom & Mary Perrot

Along with a strong showing on the water, LBRA showcased the depth of its fleet and trailer-loading talents, thanks to LBRA Captain A.C. DuPont’s transport of the red LBRA trailer from Long Beach to Toronto, loaded to the hilt with the fragile shells, oars, tools, and other essentials needed for a large regatta. The trailer’s configuration of boats was so impressive that representatives from other clubs came to observe the loading process at the conclusion of the regatta. In addition to A.C., special thanks to Fritz Theyer and Peter Rasmussen for organizing what boats/riggers/oars, etc. needed to be on the trailer. Also, thank you to those dedicated trailer loaders (you know who you are!), who went above and beyond to make sure boats were secure for the long journey.

It was a successful event with outstanding LBRA participation and support for each other. We hope more LBRA members will take advantage of opportunities for competition and great fun at future events.
